How To: Change a default application in Windows
This article describes how to change a default application for certain filetypes in Windows (e.g. PDF, images, audio or video files etc).
The following example shows how to change the app for opening PDF files (ending with ".pdf", e.g. "application.pdf").

Click on the Windows icon in the taskbar and directly type "default", then select "Default apps" from the menu:

In the Settings window, scroll down and click "Choose default applications by file type":

You will see a very long list of all filetypes known to Windows. Scroll down to ".pdf", click on the app next to it and choose the new default, e.g. "Adobe Acrobat Reader DC":
As mentioned above, this works for all filetypes known to Windows and you can select from all applications installed on your computer.
All settings can also be changed back to their previous default at once in the "Default apps" window by clicking the "Reset" button:
